Trice (SVG Motorsport) blitzed the championship’s inaugural meeting at Brands Hatch with a dream race win hat-trick, which he duly followed up with the opening two victories at Donington Park last time out. That tremendous run has given him a healthy early lead in the standings.
The driver to end his winning run was one of the rookie class contenders on the grid, Angus Whiteside. Showing his intent with a second place finish during the season opener back in May, the former karter stormed to a brilliant victory at Donington Park – alongside four rookie wins so far.
Fellow rookie Ravi Ramyead had almost recorded a race win of his own at Brands Hatch, having taken the fight to Trice and led most of race three in Kent. Second overall in that race and three rookie podiums has been his prizes in a great season so far.
All the rookie class contenders are competing on equal terms this season with their cars run centrally by want2race. Amongst that group to also star at the front of the field has been Darren Leung, who scored a pair of third place finishes at Donington Park.
Gilbert Yates has also impressed, matching Leung’s tally of three rookie podiums to date. Edward Acres and Danny Dwyer both picked up silverware at Brands Hatch, while Tom Hartley Jnr has been knocking on the door of a maiden podium finish.
Of the more experienced drivers in the main GTA class, it’s Wes Pearce (Elite Motorsport) who now leads the chasing pack to Trice. The former Ginetta GT5 Challenge racer made his mark at the front of the field last time out with second, third and fourth place finishes overall.
Roy Alderslade (Assetto Motorsport) was the chief challenger at Brands Hatch meanwhile, with the 2019 Ginetta G40 Cup ‘Chairmans Cup’ champion scoring a hat-trick of third place results. While he had a tougher outing at Donington Park, he’ll be one to watch this weekend.
Three other drivers have scored GTA podium finishes so far this season and they all drive for Assetto Motorsport. Julian Wantling finished in the class top three in each of the opening two events, while Martin Wills and Lee Goldsmith each picked up their first trophies at Donington Park.
The 2021 grid is completed by a selection of drivers with experience in the Ginetta G40 Cup; Neil Wallace (SVG Motorsport) and SF Racing duo Gary Wager and Shawn Fleming.
