James Townsend and Liona Theobald hit major milestones with Ginetta during their GT Cup debut.
The pair will race a Ginetta for a combined 150th time at Donington park this weekend, 20th – 21st April, racing in Ginetta’s 2023 British GT race winning GT4 car.
Townsend started his racing career in 2017. He competed in the G40 GRDC before graduating into Ginetta’s GT5 Challenge in 2018 and 2019. Then, he moved up to the G55 GT4 SuperCup in 2022. He finished 3rd in the championship with five wins and 12 podiums.
‘Having made my racing debut back in 2017 with Ginetta in a G40 as a complete novice, I never imagined I would be about to make the milestone of one hundred race starts with this great British brand.’ – Townsend
In 2023 Townsend competed in British GT, racing Ginetta’s G56 GT4 alongside Ginetta’s Motorsport Director Mike Simpson. For 2024 he’ll be competing in GT Cup with another Ginetta alumni, Liona Theobald.
‘This season I’m excited to be back in GT Cup alongside Liona who has her own significant milestone. It’s testament to the platform Ginetta have to allow us to compete together with one of their cars to challenge for the championship.
I’d like to thank Lawrence, Mike and the Ginetta team for all of the support over the years. Who knows, maybe we’ll race another 100 together!’ – Townsend
Theobald started her racing career in 2021 in the Ginetta Junior Championship. She finished off the year with a few races in Ginetta GT5 Challenge. In 2023, she moved up to GT Championship. She stepped up in machinery to the G56 GT Pro and finished 6th overall in a highly competitive grid.
‘Firstly, a massive congratulations to James for his 100th Ginetta race start this weekend! Personally, I am marking my 50th Ginetta race start on Saturday and these are impressive milestones for us both!
From starting out in Ginetta Juniors with no racing experience at all in 2021, to now competing in the GT4 car, I have had an awesome journey learning and progressing through the Ginetta classes. I am really grateful to the teams, Ginetta, partners and everyone else involved for their support.
This weekend, I can’t wait to make my debut in GT Cup alongside James, SVG and the competitive Ginetta brand. Both James and I, as well as the whole team, are excited to go racing and achieve more milestones together!’ – Theobald
We wish both drivers the best of luck this weekend at Donington Park.
