The Lincolnshire team were front-runners throughout the inaugural season of the GT Academy last year, with class race-winners Martin Wills and Mackenzie Walker returning to the grid with them this season alongside fellow returnees Robin Grimwood and Julian Wantling.
Wills, who finished as the Chairmans Cup class runner-up in the 2018 Ginetta G40 Cup, put in some impressive displays in his eye-catching ‘Pink Panther’ G56 GTA last year. Five class podium finishes included a memorable overall race victory alongside the BTCC at Silverstone.
Walker may have only made one appearance in the championship last year, but he certainly made his mark in the Donington Park season finale. The former Lotus and Radical racer, son of former BTCC racer Sean Walker, scored a hat-trick of GTA class podiums, including a win in second overall.
Grimwood is preparing for his fifth consecutive season in Ginetta racing, having previously competed in the GRDC and G40 Cup. Adapting well to the new machinery, the Cheshire racer scored five overall top ten results and a best finish of fourth in class.
Wantling meanwhile has followed the same path as his team-mate, starting his racing career in the GRDC before progressing through the G40 Cup into the GT Academy. An impressive run last season saw him score a GTA class podium in each of the opening three events.
Jim Edwards, Assetto Motorsport Team Manager: “After a fantastic first season in the Ginetta GT Academy last year, we’re delighted to be back on the grid and welcoming back four drivers who are all part of the Assetto family.
“Martin and Mackenzie richly deserved their class wins last year and we hope they’ll be in the hunt for more this season, while I have no doubt that Robin and Julian can be up there with them. It’s shaping up to be a very exciting season of racing.”
The Ginetta GT Academy gives drivers of all experience levels the opportunity to enjoy entry level GT racing. The series offers an uncompromising package of high performance racing at an affordable cost, with the exposure of competing at British GT and BTCC events.
