Preview: Ginetta Junior Championship, Round Three, Knockhill

Bailey Voisin is the new name at the top of the Michelin Ginetta Junior Championship standings as the series heads across the border to Knockhill this weekend (29/30 August).

The Scottish circuit has been a firm favourite for drivers in the championship for many years and regularly produces some of the closest racing on the calendar. If the opening two rounds of 2020 have been anything to go by, we’re set for non-stop action this weekend.

Voisin (R Racing) makes the trip north in high spirits courtesy of a fantastic double victory last time out at Brands Hatch, to add to a win in the season opener at Donington Park. His lead is slim however, with Tom Lebbon (Elite Motorsport) only a single point behind.

Lebbon secured a brilliant maiden win in the final race at Brands Hatch to become the first Ginetta Junior Scholar to take an overall victory in his first season since Daniel Harper in 2016. A hugely impressive start to the season has also included three rookie class wins.

The other three went the way of Georgi Dimitrov (Richardson Racing) during a dream debut at Donington Park, in which he also took two overall wins. While Brands Hatch was a bit tougher for him, he remains third in the standings with just eleven points between him and the top.

R Racing have four drivers in the championship top seven at present, with second year contenders Josh Rattican, Freddie Tomlinson and Joel Pearson joining Voisin in battling at the front. Rattican took a podium treble at Brands Hatch to make it four so far this campaign.

Pearson enjoyed a breakthrough podium at Donington Park, while Tomlinson secured best ever qualifying and race results of fifth last time out. The R Racing line-up is completed by rookie Aston Millar, who has also stepped onto the overall podium at Donington Park.

Zak Taylor (Alistair Rushforth Motorsport) is another rookie driver to have made his mark so far with an outright top three at Donington and four consecutive rookie rostrums. Elite Motorsport’s William Vincent, Tommy Pintos and Seb Hopkins have also taken class silverware.

As is traditional in Ginetta Juniors, the battles have been close fought throughout the field. Amongst those getting into the thick of the action in the midfield has been Elite Motorsport’s Josh Miller and William Aspin, Tom Edgar (TCR) and Richardson Racing duo Rowan Vincent and Trennon Bettany.

On the cusp of breakthrough top ten finishes at Brands Hatch were Liam McNeilly (Fox Motorsport) and Joe Wheeler (Assetto Motorsport), while Will Rochford (TCR) and Will Jenkins (Privateer) are also chasing their first top ten results of the campaign.
