While the overall champion was provisionally crowned two weeks’ ago at Donington Park, the battle for the Chairmans Cup is going down to the final weekend. The class caters for the drivers aged 45 and over, with Mark Lee (SVG Motorsport) holding the points lead.
Consistency has been the key to the Yorkshireman’s title bid. A constant presence in the battles at the front of the class, he has impressively picked up eight podium finishes in the 12 races to date and also secured a maiden pole position last time out.
With 109 points up for grabs this weekend, Lee holds a 45 point lead from Neil Wallace (SVG Motorsport). While Wallace only has one podium finish to his name, from the Oulton Park season opener, he’s kept in contention by finishing every race in the class top six.
Gary Wager (SF Racing) is ten points behind Wallace in the standings, courtesy of four podium finishes including a brilliant hat-trick at Brands Hatch. The class entry is completed by his hugely experienced team-mate Shawn Fleming, who’s twice visited the rostrum this year.
After securing the last seven race wins on the bounce, provisional overall champion Tom Golding will be sitting out the finale weekend. That leaves his sparring partner Giles Dawson (Assetto Motorsport) as the driver to beat heading to Snetterton.
Dawson went toe-to-toe with Golding through the early stages of the season and scored three wins in a row himself. After a frustrating double DNF in the mid-season, he’s back on a run of four consecutive podium finishes and will want to score more this weekend.
Owen Hizzey (SVG Motorsport) has hugely impressed in his maiden campaign in senior competition, with a run of seven podium finishes being the longest streak by anyone bar Golding. A breakthrough race win would cap off the year in style for the teenage talent.
Chris White (Raceway Motorsport) will head into the weekend in confident mood after picking up a pair of third place finishes last time out, while team-mate Ignazio Zanon is one to watch having featured on the podium three times across the campaign.
Fellow Raceway Motorsport driver Paulo Scripo has also taken home silverware this year, whilst Mark Sansom (Assetto Motorsport) will be determined to get a maiden podium. Debuting with Assetto meanwhile is Barry Ward, one of the team’s regular race engineers.
