Liona Theobald is the first female GT Pro driver announced to compete in the Protyre Motorsport GT Championship this year, teamed with SVG Motorsport. The young driver made an impressive Ginetta debut at the 2021 Junior Winter Series despite no previous race history. She has since swiftly risen through the ranks- graduating from Ginetta Juniors, competing in the GT5 challenge, and advancing onto the Ginetta GT Championship.
Ahead of the season, Liona was recently selected for the 2023 Motorsport UK Academy program which is a recognised pathway for new talent, developing and mentoring the most promising drivers in the UK. The 17-year-old will be amongst the youngest talents on the GT Championship grid, competing against Ginetta all-star champions.
Liona said: “This season I am really excited to take on the challenge of the inaugural Ginetta GT Championship with SVG Motorsport.”
“2022 was a big learning curve for me being my first year racing, but I am eager to get 2023 started! I look forward to seeing what myself and the team can achieve.”
The rising star is focused on making her mark on the grid this year with ambitions of stepping on the podium to claim her first championship trophy. Her entry to the championship will see her one step closer to pursue a career in the world of endurance motor racing.
Andy Johnson, SVG Team Principal, said: “I am delighted to have Liona [Theobald] on board with the team this season and look forward to supporting one of the youngest talents on the grid.
She showed great performance in the G40 Junior championship and GT5 race entry which fills us with confidence heading into the GT Championship.”
