Hampus Rydman wrapped up the title with an event to spare to continue his phenomenal run of success in the championship. He secured five consecutive GT5 Challenge drivers’ titles alongside his 2008 G20 Cup triumph.
Rydman headed into the meeting in high spirits, having won both races at Anderstorp during the season opener back in May. He kicked off the return visit in fine style in qualifying on Saturday, taking pole position by half a second to Jesper Ramsberg.
A change of conditions overnight meant a wet circuit greeted them from race one. Rydman tamed the tricky surface to lead from start to finish for his seventh win from nine races at that point. Kevin Blomberg moved up to second early on, before a moment cost him several places.
Ramsberg grabbed second but was soon overtaken by Peter Wiborg, with those two going on to complete the podium. Douglas Dahlström, Robin Lassander and Alexzander Kristiansson were next up, with Blomberg eventually taking the chequered flag in seventh.
The track was dry again before they headed out for race two, with Hampus Rydman taking the early lead. He started pulling clear of the pack, however the rain soon returned with a vengeance and it was clear the leader was struggling for grip.
Ramsberg pounced to move ahead and ultimately secure his second win of the season. Blomberg and Lassander also picked up podium finishes. Rydman had to settle for fourth. For only the second time this season. he’s finished outside the top three, ahead of Alexzander and Niklas Kristiansson.
The latter completed a double win in the Senior class. Kari Mäkinen and Ola Gustafsson finished second and third in the opening race, before swapping positions in race two. Kristiansson holds a 16 point class lead over Gustafsson heading into the season finale.
The 2022 Swedish Ginetta GT5 Challenge season comes to an end later this month (30 September / 01 October). It closes with two races at Mantorp Park.
