Salkeld will progress up Ginetta’s ladder of championships following a sensational 2019 season. In his maiden G40 Cup campaign, the GRDC graduate was an established front-running contender throughout and produced a stunning run of 11 consecutive top three results.
That run meant the Yorkshireman took the title battle down to the season finale, with a decisive move on the last racing lap of the year securing him title glory. He ended the year with five race wins, 13 podium finishes, seven fastest laps and the best qualifying average on the grid.
The 28 year old from Yorkshire will now make his debut on the BTCC support package with the support of Ainsley Harriott, Coopland Bakery, Yorkshire Financial Management, AHP, Fox Lloyd Jones, Raindow Trust, Harrogate PT and Dscvr.
Chris Salkeld: “2019 was a fairy tale season for me. After a terrible start put me over 60 points behind after the opening two rounds, to come back and win was much more than we could have dreamed of and it’s a true lesson in no matter how bad it looks, how difficult the fightback will be, to never ever quit.
“After everything the team did for me last year, it was a no brainer for me to stay with them to make the step up to the GT4 SuperCup. It’s a big step up for me this year, but one that I’m really excited about making. We’re hungrier than ever to shine even more success on that Assetto star.
“We’re looking firmly at 2020 as a development year, with a new championship, new car and a new style of racing to learn. With that being said, I got to enjoy the taste of champagne last season and I will be pushing harder than I ever have done to make sure I’ll be challenging at the front of the Pro Am class from the outset.”
Jim Edwards, team manager: “It’s been an absolute pleasure to guide Chris from a complete novice and help develop him into a Ginetta champion in only his second year of racing. Naturally Chris was high on the list of many established teams for his signature over the winter period, and therefore we are delighted he has chosen to continue for a third consecutive season with Assetto Motorsport.
“As we move forward as a team into the highly competitive world of the Ginetta GT4 Supercup, we are determined to continue our winning partnership together during 2020 and our collective goal will be to win the Pro Am title in our debut season.”
The Millers Oils Ginetta GT4 SuperCup is Ginetta’s flagship championship, with a three-class structure incorporating Pro, Pro Am and Am categories. In 2020, the series will be contested over eight race weekends in support of the British Touring Car Championship.
