Leung will move up to the top rung of Ginetta’s famed motorsport ladder in only his second ever season of car racing, having been part of the first group of rookie drivers to compete in the GT Academy during its inaugural year.
The Yorkshire based driver was one of the leading rookies throughout as he enjoyed a very impressive maiden campaign. On the class podium in his debut race, he ultimately recorded ten podium finishes in 15 races to secure second place in the final class standings.
Leung went on to contest the final two rounds of the GT4 SuperCup season with Assetto, and impressed with a pair of Pro Am podium finishes. He’s since gained more GT4 experience in the 24H Series, racing with CWS Motorsport in the Dubai 24 Hours and Abu Dhabi 6 Hours.
Assetto Motorsport will make a full time return to the GT4 SuperCup this season, having made their debut back in 2019. The Lincolnshire team will also be running a Ginetta G56 GT4 in the British GT Championship for a second consecutive season.
Darren Leung: “The decision to compete in the GT Academy as a rookie was one of the best decisions I’ve made and I was pleased to finish second behind Angus. I then managed to get a couple of Pro Am podiums in GT4 SuperCup, so it’s clear the GT Academy concept teaches very transferable skills.
“The Ginetta G56 GT4 is an unbelievable car and the paddock rattles when it fires up. The concept of lower downforce and higher power creates a really rewarding driving experience, which definitely uses some of the feel developed from the GTA.
“It gave me the confidence and core competence to race in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, where I had reasonable pace compared to the other ams. I now have the ambition for this season to finish inside the top three in class in the GT4 SuperCup, and also to do a round of British GT and a couple of other endurance races in the G56.”
Jim Edwards, Assetto Motorsport Team Manager: “Assetto Motorsport are delighted and excited to be continuing our partnership with Darren as he steps up to the eagerly awaited new Ginetta GT4 Supercup.
“Darren has impressed us with not only his speed, but his determination and desire to absorb everything motorsport has to offer. We can’t wait for the season to begin.”
The Millers Oils Ginetta GT4 SuperCup is Ginetta’s flagship championship. In 2022, the series will be contested over seven race weekends in support of the British Touring Car Championship, with a major change seeing the introduction of the Ginetta G56 GT4 as the lead car.
