Ginetta GT Supercup driver Tom Ingram was awarded a much sought-after place in the 2012 KX Akademy last weekend, as programme mentor Jason Plato announced his chosen two protégés at Croft Circuit.
Ingram, who is already twice-champion in Ginetta (Ginetta Junior in 2010 & Supercup G50 in 2011) is fast becoming a face to watch out for thanks, in part, to his popularity around the paddock and immense credibility on the track.
He said; “This is a great opportunity which has been given to me by Jason Plato and the team at KX Akademy, it’s such a relief to not have to worry about funding my racing for the remainder of the season. Having the support of the KX Akademy lets me focus on getting my third title whilst allowing me to raise my profile on the racing scene.”
Open to 18-30 year old drivers in both two and four-wheel series through a bursary programme, the KX Akademy sets out to support individuals who have already demonstrated their skill, determination and focus, as well as display the raw talent and single-mindedness that is a pre-requisite in motorsport, whilst lacking the necessary funding and support.
Ingram has shown incredible tenacity when seeking sponsorship and the support from KX Akademy will enable him to contest the remainder of the season without worry. Joining him on the scheme is Stefan Hodgetts, a former Ginetta GT3, G55 and G50 driver who currently drives for the Air Asia Renalt Clio team.
Jason Plato said; “Selecting two candidates for the remainder of this season has been incredibly tough, there were a fair few drivers that we were interested in but ultimately after some lengthy debates and rigorous interviews we decided upon these two. Tom and Stefan are very different characters and each bring something unique to the KX Akademy but they both share one thing; namely talent. That said there is much for them to learn not just to improve their driving ability but more importantly their ability to create a paying-career and seamlessly move between racing-driver and commercial and astute businessmen."
Ginetta Chairman Lawrence Tomlinson added; “It’s great to see both former and current Ginetta drivers chosen to be a part of this innovative scheme. Having cut his teeth with Ginetta, Tom Ingram is a star of the motorsport ladder Ginetta provides to racers of all levels. There’s no doubt he has a bright future ahead of him.”
