Ginetta Sets The Pace In GT4 Europe Free Practice

Ginetta factory driver Charlie Robertson set the fastest overall time across Saturday’s two GT4 European Series Northern Cup Free Practice sessions at Brands Hatch.

Driving the #100 Simpson Motorsport Ginetta G55 GT4 car, Robertson lapped the Kent venue’s iconic Grand Prix layout in 1: 32.881 in the first session, becoming the only driver in the meeting so far to dip below the 1:33 mark.

In the second session, Robertson’s co-driver and fellow Sepang 12 Hours podium finisher Tom Hibbert was second-fastest, with a time of of 1:34.096. But even the fastest time set in that session, by the Tolman Motorsport McLaren, couldn’t eclipse Robertson's effort from the morning.

Elsewhere, French team CMR By Sport Garage’s pairing of Nyls Stievenart and Le Mans veteran Soheil Ayari finished P10 and P9 in the two free-practice sessions respectively in their #26 G55 GT4, which is usually found racing the GT4 European Series’ Southern Cup.

Qualifying for Sunday’s pair of one-hour GT4 European Series Northern Cup races takes place at 5:35pm Saturday evening, with each driver getting their own session to set a lap.

Julian Simpson-Smith, Simpson Motorsport: “We made some setup changes between FP1 and FP2 and we’re now happy with the balance of the car on older tyres. We have a good race pace and hopefully qualifying will go well.”

Charlie Robertson: “I’ve not raced the G55 GT4 in a while, so it’s great to get it out around the Grand Prix circuit and show what it can do against the GT4 European Series field. It feels like old times back in the GT4 Supercup in 2014! We’re hoping to stay out of trouble and keep it clean. I set my time on new tyres at the start of the session, so the first time we’ll know where we really stand is after qualifying. We’re keeping our cards close to our chest, so we’ll see how qualifying goes.”

Tom Hibbert: “It was good fun and setup is mint! The main thing for me is just getting used to the G55 GT4’s ABS. It allows a completely different driving style, you can brake right into the corner without fear of locking up.”
