Total Control Racing will make a welcome return to the Michelin Ginetta GT4 SuperCup during the fourth event of the season at Oulton Park Island Circuit on 6th/7th June, having agreed a deal with its Ginetta GT5 Challenge front-runner Callum Pointon to debut in the BTCC support category.
Although at this point a one-off appearance for the 21-year-old in the GT4 SuperCup, further outings later in the year are a possibility where the series doesn’t clash with his existing commitments in the British GT-supporting Ginetta GT5 Challenge.
Marking a big step-up for Pointon in terms of power and performance from his regular Ginetta G40 to the monstrous 370bhp G55 he will pilot next month, the Cheddleton driver is well aware the Oulton Park races will be a big challenge.
But following a very successful test at Snetterton in Norfolk yesterday, Thursday, 21st May, where he received key coaching from British GT Championship and Blancpain Endurance Series racer Jonny Adam, Pointon is feeling quietly confident.
“I’m really looking forward to Oulton, we’re going to take the weekend as it comes but the test with Jonny at Snetterton went really well – for my first time in the car we were pretty much where we wanted to be”, he commented, “The Challenge is going quite well so we’re carrying on with that and although this might be a one-off, we could race in some other SuperCup rounds that don’t clash.
“The G55 is a beast, a proper race car with a big engine, lots of horsepower, really good brakes and the aero as well. When you’ve been in a G40 and then jump in the G55, it’s a big difference but I adapted to it pretty well. It’d be good to be competitive at Oulton and get my name out there, but whatever happens it’ll be a really good experience.”
Pointon is currently in his third season with TCR in the Ginetta GT5 Challenge and having claimed four podiums from the first six races, including a best finish of second in round five, he is third in the 2015 championship and only eight points shy of the runner-up position.
Wednesbury-based TCR last competed in the GT4 SuperCup in 2013 and the team, which won the series title in 2012 with Carl Breeze and came close to successfully defending the championship crown with Breeze the following year, is delighted to be back in the flagship Ginetta category.
“We’re really looking forward to being back in the GT4 SuperCup, it’s great to be bringing Callum through from the Ginetta Challenge for his debut in the G55s and we’re confident he’ll do a really good job”, said TCR team principal Lee Brookes.
“Callum is a very quick young driver, he’s got a lot of ability and the test this week at Snetterton went as well as we could have hoped really. There are some very quick drivers in the SuperCup so it’s going to be a big challenge for Callum, but he’s having a great year in the G40 and we’re sure he’ll make a bit of an impact.”
Following officially timed testing at Oulton Park on Friday, 5th June, Michelin Ginetta GT4 SuperCup qualifying will get underway at 11.35 on Saturday, 6th June, with round 10 following at 16.35. On Sunday, 7th June, round 11 will begin at 14.10 and will be screened live on ITV4. The weekend’s two Ginetta Junior races, meanwhile, will also benefit from live TV on the Sunday at 13.40 and 16.55.
