PODIUM FINISHER POINTON EYEING CHALLENGE TITLE WITH TCR

Rapid sportscar racer Callum Pointon is targeting a sustained bid for this year’s Ginetta GT5 Challenge title with defending champions Total Control Racing after this morning, Friday, 30th January, being named as the Wednesbury outfit’s second signing for the 2015 campaign.

Returning for his third season in the one-make championship, the 20-year-old from Cheddleton in Staffordshire will undoubtedly be one of the front-running competitors having raced to two podiums last year on his way to fifth in the standings.

Pointon really came into his own during the second half of the 2014 season with the penultimate event at Brands Hatch Grand Prix Circuit the highlight, his two rostrum visits book-ending another top four result.

Acknowledging the youngster’s terrific progression, TCR team boss Lee Brookes is confident Pointon will be able to mount a series championship bid this year alongside new team-mate James Kellett who is graduating from the Ginetta Junior series, forming an especially strong line-up.

“Callum did a fantastic job last year, he’s come on so well over the last two seasons and we’re all so happy he’s staying with TCR”, he commented, “He’s a great kid to work with, he’s getting quicker all the time and should really be a major threat for the championship. Ginetta Challenge is always tough but Callum definitely starts the year as one of the main contenders.”

Following a successful karting career which included participation in Rotax Mini Max and Junior Max, Pointon notably finished fourth in the Kartmasters Grand Prix in 2011 before making the move into cars two years later.

Graduating into the Ginetta Challenge with TCR, he concluded his rookie campaign an impressive seventh overall in the standings before becoming a front-running regular last year. Now, Pointon is ready to try and follow in the wheel-tracks of former team-mate George Gamble who won the title for TCR in 2014.

“We’re definitely going all-out for the championship this year”, said Pointon, “I learnt a lot being team-mates with George [Gamble] last year and it was fantastic taking my first couple of podiums towards the end of the season. I’ve got high hopes and it’ll be great working with James [Kellett].

“Staying with TCR was something we always wanted to do, we’ve had two fantastic years in the Ginetta Challenge with Lee [Brookes] and his team. They always provide an incredible car, the aim is to make the most of that and fight for podiums and wins.”

This year’s Ginetta GT5 Challenge season will commence over Easter weekend, 4th/5th/6th April, at Oulton Park International Circuit in Cheshire.
